Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden re-affirmed his place as the UK’s most exciting K-1 fighter when he defeated the previously unbeaten Ahmed Astitou of The Netherlands on Sunday 1 December 2013.
Chad ended an outstanding year on a high in what is now likely to be a rare outing on home ground for him since he became the only British fighter signed by the international K-1 Global brand.
Over 100 supporters made the trip to Gateshead’s Lancastrian Suite, creating an electrifying atmosphere which was more than matched by ‘2 Slick’s performance.
From the off, Chad’s explosive punches left his opponent bewildered. Astitou kept coming but Chad continued to find more angles to punish him with, landing some great knees and kicks to the body and face, along with a jumping knee towards the end of the first round which saw the crowd go wild.
In the second round, Astitou charged forward but Chad refused to give up the centre or control, dominating with clean punches and landing two spinning back fists flush to the jaw of his opponent.
Upping the pace in the third, Chad brought out every technique in the book. In what was to prove his best round of the night, his jumping kicks and spinning back fists left Astitou rocking and reeling towards the final bell.
“It’s great to be back to winning ways, especially against a tough opponent who was previously unbeaten and stopped nine out 15 wins,” said an elated Chad after the fight. “I want to thank my coach and dad, Dean Sugden, and the rest of the team who supported me both in the build up to and during the fight.
“I’d also like to thank my family, friends and fans who are always there to cheer me on. Without their support, promoters wouldn’t be able to achieve the fantastic ticket sales it takes to bring top notch international fighters like this over for me to beat!”
“The accolades for Chad are coming in thick and fast and so they should,” said Dean. “This was his best performance to date, against a very dangerous opponent who came into the ring determined to protect an unbeaten record and dethrone Chad.
“But Chad had an edge about his work tonight. He stayed calm but aggressive and made it an absolute cracker of a fight for the crowd who witnessed a new improved version of Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden – a scary proposition but true!”
